Medi-Key Medical Keyboard Leads the Fight in Infection Control

Redhill, UK, 27 July 2010 – Bytec Medical, the recently-formed medical equipment manufacturer, engineering and design arm of the Bytec group, has announced its first product to be placed on the market. The Medi-Key™ medical keyboard is specifically designed with infection control as a primary objective and has been trialled to meet the strict demands of A&E departments, hospital wards and other healthcare environments.

Manufactured using hypoallergenic latex free silicone rubber, Medi-Key’s keyboard is coated to provide excellent mechanical and chemical resistance to chlorine and alcohol based disinfectants. As a secondary defence, it incorporates antimicrobial silver ion technology to provide effective control of bacteria, including E. Coli and MRSA.

The keyboard and touchpad are both intuitive and easy to use, benefiting from Bytec Medical’s ergonomics research with clinicians and healthcare providers. Smooth contours of the low height keys make it quick and easy to clean while attached to the computer and without changeable covers or the need for immersion. The Medi-Key is also sealed to IP65 allowing it to be used in wash-down areas and for deep cleaning. An inbuilt track pad provides a convenient and familiar interface that is easy to use and clean, with no grooves or dirt traps.

To ensure an effective cleaning routine, the Medi-Key self-monitors its usage and advises an appropriate cleaning schedule through the use of the Smart Disinfect function. There is no


need for replaceable covers. The keyboard is significantly quieter than other types of keyboard, making it ideally suited to bedside and ward applications.

Back-lit versions feature inbuilt key illumination that ensures exceptional usability in low light, darkness and during photosensitive applications or procedures. Illumination levels are readily adjusted by holding the function and arrow keys.

Both wired and wireless versions are available, the latter featuring an innovative docking system and an internal lithium polymer battery, which offers a minimum operating time of 8 hours fully charged (illuminated) and can be re-charged automatically via the USB port on the terminal. The use of radio frequency signals eliminates line of sight issues associated with infrared keyboards: a manual binding feature locks-in the keyboards signal, providing a high level of security and enabling multiple wireless keyboards to operate reliably within a multi-terminal environment. There is minimal interference with other wireless devices.

With an operational life of 5 million cycles, the Medi-Key conforms to CE, FCC, UL60601 and UL 1950/CSA 22.2 950 standards.
